Netizens are linking a story told by disgraced former advocate Malesela Teffo to the new allegations regarding why DJ Sumbody was murdered. While police arrested a businessman for allegedly orchestrating the producer and entrepreneur’s assassination, police have yet to confirm a motive.
South Africans are reeling following a report by Sunday World suggesting why DJ Sumbody was assassinated. The Monate Mpolaye hitmaker was gunned down in Johannesburg in 2022, and latest reports suggest he was killed for knowing too much about a multimillion-rand drug consignment that vanished while in police custody in KwaZulu-Natal.
Malesela Teffo's interview resurfaces amid DJ Sumbody allegations
The theory gained more traction after social media user @BassieBuzzing resurfaced a snippet of former advocate Malesela Teffo’s explosive interview on Podcast and Chill.

In the snippet, the disbarred lawyer who once represented four of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa trial shared a story about a 2019 incident that allegedly caused friction between the former Minister of Police and the previous National Commissioner of Police. In the caption, the social media user questioned if this was the same incident that resulted in the assassination of DJ Sumbody. The post was captioned:
“Could this be the cargo?”
In the snippet, Teffo claimed that the previous Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of Police clashed over the consignment of drugs from South America, which was intercepted by the police in Durban.
Teffo claimed that the minister seized the drugs, which led to the then National Commissioner of Police confronting and reminding him that operational matters fell under his authority and not the minister’s. According to Teffo, the minister refused to back down, sparking a war over the cargo. Malesela Teffo said:
“It started a tug of war. Now the minister and the commissioner started to fight over the cargo. The possession of the cargo. So, the Minister knew first and sent his people to go and take the cargo and put it somewhere else. The national commissioner knew about that and said, ‘Hey Minister, why did you do that? You’re not responsible for the operation. I’m responsible for the operation as the national commissioner. You’re responsible for the policies. The cargoes and everything, you’re not supposed to interfere in that.’ Now that one [Minister] said, ‘No. You can go to hell, you should not take it.’”
