Career

In 1991, he joined the ANC full-time as the first Regional Secretary in Northern Natal. By 1994, he became the ANC’s Provincial Secretary in KwaZulu-Natal and was later elected to the provincial legislature, where he led several key committees.
Mchunu rose through ANC ranks, becoming Provincial Chairperson in 2005. He served as KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Education from 2009 to 2013, and then as Premier from 2013 to 2016. These roles were key milestones among Senzo Mchunu’s previous offices at the provincial level.
