When Bentley realised his sporting career had been derailed in his junior year at Highland Community College, he dropped out and began writing songs and rapping.
During an August 2016 appearance on Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, A1 narrated how he decided to relocate to Los Angeles with no savings due to his passion for music.
I quit my job and moved to a new city with my cousin in search of greener pastures. We were homeless for eight months before I met Raphael Saadiq.

In 2010, A1 co-wrote Unusual for Trey Songz. Featuring rapper Drake, the hit bagged an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award, peaked at No. 7 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and entered the Billboard Hot 100.
Six years later, he released his debut single Upside Down featuring O.T. Genasis. In 2017, Bentley co-wrote Chris Brown's Summer Breeze, French Montana's Hotel Bathroom, T-Pain's No Rush, Ty Dolla Sign's Ex, Gucci Mane's Enormous and G-Eazy's Crash & Burn.
