One person struck gold when they paid less than R40,000 for a popular Volkswagen model during an auction.
Taking to TikTok, @sthe0051, who often posts videos of cars being sold at an affordable price, shared one that caught the attention of over two million online users. Attending a Bidvest Burchmore's auction, the man captured the moment when the company sold a stunning white Polo.
While the venue was packed with hopeful buyers and those interested in the vehicles on display, the auctioneer knocked the gavel on the block when an unknown motorist bid R37,000 on the car, which usually retails between R350,000 and R550,000.

"Buying a vehicle at a low price, such as R37 000, can reduce upfront costs but may increase overall ownership expenses if the car requires frequent repairs or has high maintenance needs. Older or auctioned vehicles might come with hidden issues, leading to higher long-term repair costs."

How do you bid for a car?
According to Bidvest Burchmores, if you have no experience bidding, it is best to attend the auction as an observer to familiarise yourself with the process. When you bid, you are required to raise your hand when the auctioneer indicates a price for the vehicle.
Bidvest Burchmores also states that an R8,000 registration fee is deducted from the price of the vehicle that you purchased at the auction. However, if unsuccessful, the company will refund the participant.

@nellymakola shared in the comments:
"Auctions must be part of the subjects at school so that once we start working, we know that we belong there too."
@thevillagepope told the online community of her experience purchasing a vehicle in this manner:
"I got my car at an auction, and it was the best financial decision I made."
A surprised @momuks6 wrote:
"This is not possible. Not at these prices."
@thembi_012, on the other hand, felt differently about the above TikTokker's opinion and commented:
"Great buy!"
Tips for first-time car auction buyers
If you're thinking about buying a car at an auction in South Africa, there are a few important things to keep in mind. First, most cars are sold “voetstoots,” in other words, as is, with no warranty. That means you are responsible for any problems once the car is yours, so it is wise to inspect the car carefully or bring a mechanic with you.
Also, auctions often add extra costs like buyer’s commission, VAT, and admin fees, which can push up the final price. Factor those in when budgeting. Payment is usually expected on the same day, and most auctions don’t allow vehicle financing. You will need to pay via EFT, bank cheque, or cash. Lastly, do your homework. Check the car’s book value, history, and whether it has any outstanding finance or issues.
There are several popular and trusted places to buy cars at auctions in South Africa. WesBank Auction Centre, based in Johannesburg, is known for quality vehicles and transparent processes. Burchmores, as shown in the clip, operates in multiple cities and is popular for bank-repossessed vehicles. SMD (Salvage Management and Disposals) offers online and physical auctions for accident-damaged and repossessed cars. Auction Nation and Aucor also have a strong presence with regular public auctions. These places allow buyers to view listings online, attend preview days, and bid in person or digitally.
