What causes steam in vehicles
According to Advanced Automotive Repair, steam coming from a car usually points to problems with the cooling system. When the engine gets too hot, it can cause the coolant to boil and create the steam that was seen filling the taxi. This often happens when there's a leak in the cooling system, low coolant levels, or a blocked radiator that can't do its job properly.
Other common causes include a broken water pump that can't move coolant around the engine, damaged hoses that let coolant escape, or a faulty thermostat that stops coolant from reaching the engine. In worse cases, the steam might mean the engine has serious internal damage that needs immediate attention from a qualified mechanic.
When steam starts coming from any vehicle, the safest thing to do is pull over immediately and turn off the engine. Passengers should never stay inside a steaming vehicle as the situation could get worse quickly, and the steam itself can cause burns if it's from boiling coolant.
