A South African content creator, Belle Westley, had locals laughing when she showed her American boyfriend describing Afrikaans as sad when spoken. The humoured girlfriend tried to give an explanation as to why he linked the language with the emotion.
Belle uploaded a video on her Instagram account on 22 June, 2025, showing how her beloved partner, who social media users referred to as Sam in the comments, mimicked the accent with Afrikaans phrases. He even threw in the popular 'ag, shame.'
The local woman wrote in the post:
"My American boyfriend is trying to understand why South Africans sound 'sad' when they talk Afrikaans. Meanwhile, we just love stretching out words."
