Naledi Pandor Exposes Corruption in Department of Home Affairs and Touches on Working With Ramaphosa

Naledi Pandor recently shared her dreadful experience as the Minister of Home Affairs for two years.

She had replaced Dr Dlamini Zuma, who had joined the African Union. Pandor explained that then-President Jacob Zuma had been eyeing her for a while before awarding her the position:

“He had been looking at me strangely for some days, and I suspected there was something afoot.”

Pandor remembered not being happy about her appointment, but accepted it nonetheless.

The politician explained that her job as the Minister of Home Affairs was very difficult. She witnessed public servants engaging in acts of corruption, like selling visas from their cars:

“Corruption was the worst: watching our public servants selling our country’s documents, visas in the boot of a car and identity documents being sold off.”

Although her assignment was tough, she served in her role for two years and described it as her worst job:

“Home Affairs gave me grey hair.”

Naledi Pandor on working with President Cyril Ramaphosa

Naledi Pandor was stunned by President Ramaphosa’s work ethic and stated:

“He can read a balance sheet, boy.”

She highlighted that he had an eye for detail and paid attention to topics related to finance:

“He could do it in a second. You would have read the same memo, but you wouldn’t get to those numbers. On occasions, he has saved our economy.”
