Ramaphosa’s solution was to place the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, on special leave. The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, kept the seat warm for the official Acting Minister of Police.
The position was made available to Prof Firoz Cachalia, who had to retire from his position at the University of the Witwatersrand. Minister Mantashe retained his responsibilities as Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources at the beginning of August.

“I am not going to second-guess officers when they are in the field, when they have to deal with violent criminals. It is for them to take whatever steps are necessary to subdue the criminal and to protect themselves.”
South Africans were first disappointed by the Minister’s age and how he articulated himself during his speech. They criticised his vision and urged him to step down immediately.
