A love like no other

Briefly News had the pleasure of speaking with Jackie Smith, an employee at George Rennie, who took time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions.

We asked Jackie to tell us a bit about the man with whom she shares a bond, as seen in the video. She said:

"In short, Bheki and I have been together on and off for four years. Being in an interracial relationship has many challenges, but we are stronger now than ever before. I was in an abusive relationship and lived in a white community across the bridge from a township. I ended up there, and the community literally saved me. They supported me, loved me, and that’s where I met Bheki. That was almost five years ago."

The team asked Jackie if she's always been familiar with isiZulu, seeing that she sang the whole Amapiano song, word for word. Jackie commented:

"With regards to the isiZulu, in the township, they always accommodated me with English, but I slowly started to learn the language. I could understand what was being said, but was not confident enough to speak isiZulu. I got a job in telesales and quickly learnt that being able to understand isiZulu was advantageous, and so, being on the other side of the phone, I started speaking it.
"Google Translate was my friend, and so with that and the help of my community, I started speaking it with more confidence. I love Amapiano and always want to sing along, so I would Google the lyrics and meanings, which also became a great tool in learning isiZulu. I was fortunate to get a job at George Rennie, a company that 100% respects and supports my relationship.

After seeing how happy Jackie and Bheki were in the clip, we asked her what the atmosphere was like at the establishment on that day. She shared:

"Our township is always happy, and the vibe is great. The DJs there are all from the township."

When asked if she anticipated their simple moment to have such a powerful meaning. Jackie responded:

"Bheki and I are very private, and so we had mixed emotions, but the video that was posted. We are happy that we can show that love has no boundaries. The article you posted made a difference to how we felt about the video, so thank you so much."

In a previous article, Briefly News reported on a viral TikTok video showing a white man and a black woman dancing together at Afro Nation. The short clip, filmed near the festival’s Amapiano stage, sparked interest for its fun vibe and cross-cultural moment.

Amapiano, which started in the townships of Gauteng around 2012, has grown into one of Africa’s biggest music movements. It blends deep house, jazz, and local rhythms, and has found fans all over the continent and abroad. Afro Nation recognised this growth and introduced a dedicated Amapiano stage in 2022, known as the “Piano People” experience.

The most recent Afro Nation festival took place in Portugal from 9 to 11 July 2025. It marked the festival’s fifth anniversary and drew thousands of people from around the world. Big-name acts like Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Uncle Waffles, Musa Keys, and Major League DJz were part of the star-studded line-up.

The video, while light-hearted, displayed how Amapiano continues to break boundaries and bring people together. It shows how music, especially Amapiano, has become a powerful connector across cultures.
