A Canadian woman sought online advice after a friend, with whom she had a pre-wedding disagreement, told her not to attend the destination wedding despite having paid her way.

The story was shared on Reddit by @iliyana117, where it gathered attention and support from other users, many of whom were shocked and sympathetic.

The woman initially believed her hotel booking for the wedding, which she had planned to use for vacation, had been cancelled by the bride and groom for a group trip she was part of. This was after they had a minor disagreement, and she had stepped down as a bridesmaid. She was still willing to attend the wedding, as a guest, and use the rest of the time for a holiday.

Hotel booking scare causes panic

After being told she was not welcome to the wedding, she contacted her travel agent. The agent handling the booking stopped responding to her calls and emails, leaving her in a panic just two weeks before the expensive holiday. She had already paid in advance for flights, transfers, accommodation, and essentials, spending CAD 5,000. As the reservation was non-refundable, she turned to social media for advice, saying she was willing to take the legal route if the matter was to escalate.

Netizens offer advice

Social media users flooded the comment section sympathising with @iliyana117. Many offered practical advice, urging her to name and shame the agent or report them to the agency's management. Some advised her to change the destination and go on holiday elsewhere, saying that after the drama, she deserved a proper vacation. Others praised her determination, saying they admired her for taking control of the situation.

User @ImVerySerious said:

"None of these commenters has any idea how lawsuits work. Sue them for emotional distress? Right. Plus therapy and 'recovering your mental health.' Good luck finding an attorney who will take that case. And I hope you have $30,000+ to burn trying."

User @Scenarioing shared:

"This would be a breach of contract claim for the price paid if not refunded. Consequential damages would be nearly impossible to recover, and the emotional distress claim mentioned by another member is not the viable kind."

User @BigRefrigerator9783 commented:

"You need to contact the airline and hotel directly, if either does not have a record of the money you have paid, inform the travel agent that THEY will be personally financially responsible if you are not refunded. If they don't respond, go to their boss."

User @Ambitious694U added:

"Then, 100% take them to small claims court, or the equivalent, wherever you are."

"They both sound toxic and horrible. 6 bridesmaids dropping out speaks volumes. You and your mate should make it a girls' trip, get manicures and pedicures, and be sipping those cocktails. Living your best life, whilst their clown show unfolds. It’s a win-win for you!"

"Get a full refund and go on holiday elsewhere."
