An interracial couple from Durban, South Africa, proved to themselves and the world that love knows no race.

A Ghanaian man, Frederick Hammond, and an Indian lady, Kiara Hammond, fell in love at first sight and never looked back. The pair started dating in 2021 after meeting at the office.
Kiara was doing her internship at Frederick’s workplace, and their love story began. During their time together, they experienced big life events, including having a baby.
Interracial couple shares how they deal with racist comments
Kiara and Frederick shared that they faced racist comments from the public since the beginning of their relationship. Although the commentary was always uncomfortable, the pair did not let it stop them from pursuing a relationship.

They got engaged a year later during the summer and tied the knot in 2023. The couple also welcomed their first baby last year and explained that he is their pride and joy:
“He will be turning one soon, and we cannot wait to celebrate his first birthday. He is always with us, perks of working from home.”
Kiara and Frederick have a huge following on social media and are famous on YouTube as they create couples content and funny pranks. They often get racist comments, but they only pay attention to the positive ones:
“We never react to the bad comments. We simply delete them and move on. People who know us from YouTube often stop us in public and ask to take pictures.”
Meeting family and friends
Kiara and Frederick explained that their relationship was cherished by both their families and friends. Their loved ones were supportive of their union from the beginning.

Kiara shared that her relationship with Frederick was not taboo, as several people in her family were in interracial relationships. Frederick’s family was excited that he found himself an Indian woman:
“Before they even got to know her personality, they were taken. I think it’s because people in Ghana are big fans of telenovelas.”

Coming to South Africa
Frederick shared that he was never going to live in Ghana forever. He and his mates always looked to live abroad in search of greener pastures, which he did.
After his European adventure failed, he made a few phone calls and made his way to Mzansi. He experienced racism on his first day from the police, but he stayed strong because he had a dream to create a better life for himself.
The couple’s cultural differences
Kiara and Frederick have learned to live life on their own terms. Although they are from different backgrounds, they do not heavily practise their culture besides exploring different foods.

Frederick still speaks his mother tongue and hopes to take Kiara and the baby to Ghana one day:
“I would like to have a traditional wedding ceremony in Ghana because my family could not make it to South Africa for my first one. My colleagues and friends represented me in 2023, but I’d love to have another wedding back home.”
