The artist then uses a sanding machine to smooth different areas of the stone until she achieves the perfect shape. After stepping back to examine her work, she removes her gloves and washes the stone piece thoroughly. The sculpture is then placed in the fire before she applies a glossy liquid with a paintbrush, which makes the natural patterns in the rock much more visible and striking.

Stone sculpture through history

According to Wikipedia, stone sculpture is one of humanity's oldest art forms, with evidence showing that even the earliest societies created stonework. The practice began perhaps with cave wall carvings and evolved into the stunning sculptures we see today, from Egypt's monuments to Greece's classical marble statues.

Different types of stone offer various challenges for artists. Soapstone is perfect for beginners, while granite is extremely difficult to work with but incredibly durable. Marble has remained the preferred choice for European sculptors since ancient Greece due to its workability and beautiful finish.

The traditional process involves several stages: roughing out large unwanted pieces with heavy tools, refining the shape with toothed chisels, and finally polishing with rasps and sandpaper to bring out the stone's natural beauty and patterns.
