Patriotic Alliance president Gayton McKenzie shared Kunene's resignation on his @GaytonMcK X account. Kunene resigned on 25 July 2025, a few days after he was found at the house of Katiso Molefe, who is accused of being involved in the gruesome killing of DJ Sumbody.
What did Kenny Kunene's resignation letter say?
Kunene addressed his resignation letter as the MMC to Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero. He said that he is stepping aside from public life while the Patriotic Alliance investigates his alleged connection with Molefe. Kunene. who served as an MMC for two years, said that he committed himself to the residents of Johannesburg and championed accessible transport for the residents.

In his resignation letter as a councillor, he said that he had made a significant contribution to building and rebuilding Johannesburg.
"I remain a loyal patriot towards our broader political mission and will remain dedicated to the upliftment of our communities," he said.

Why is Kunene stepping away?
McKenzie announced Kunene's suspension on 23 July, a day after Kunene was found at Molefe's house. Kunene said that he was not in any manner linked to Molefe. He said that he was at Molefe's house to accompany a journalist for an exclusive story for Kunene's online publication.
