KHAYELITSHA, CAPE TOWN — Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Julius Malema was roasted for inviting KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to join the Red Berets.

Malema affirmed that the EFF has been a longstanding supporter of Mkhwanazi to be appointed as the National Police commissioner. He said that if Mkhwanazi loses his job for standing against corruption, the EFF had a place for him.

Why did Malema praise Mkhwanazi?
On 6 July 2025, Mkhwanazi held a press briefing where he slammed Senzo Mchunu and the Deputy National Commissioner of Police, General Shadrack Sibiya. He accused them of interfering in the work of the South African Police Service's Political Killings Task Team.
He also alleged that police officers, politicians, ministers, parliamentarians, judges, prosecutors, and businessmen are part of a drug syndicate. He said the syndicate is headquartered in Gauteng and operates throughout the country and in Southern Africa.
Mkhwanazi also accused Mchunu of having ties with businessmen connected to the syndicate, such as Vuzimusi Cat Matlala and Brown Mogotsi. Matlala was recently arrested for the attempted murder of actress Tebogo Thobejane.
What happened after Mkhwanazi's revelations?
Mchunu initially denied having any relationship with Mogotsi. He later admitted to knowing Mogotsi and said they were comrades. President Cyril Ramaphosa placed him on special leave.
Sibiya also denied the allegations Mkhwanazi made against him. However, he soon followed in Mchunu's footsteps and was asked to take a special leave of absence while the Commission of Inquiry Ramaphosa was established to investigate the allegations.
What did South Africans say?
Netizens were not impressed with Malema's offer.
Mbhuri mbhurini Mun'wanatui Maluleke said:
"The wise and honorable Mr Mkhwanazi won't take cheap jumble sale invites. He is for the nation."
Thandi Masemula said:
"He mustn't join any of those political banana parties."
Senaele Madikizela said:
"One thing about General Mkhwanazi is that he hates being an ice boy."

Thulie Maduna said:
"Mkhwanazi does not protect illegal immigrants. He protects his people."
