WESTERN CAPE — The suspended CEO of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), Tebogo Malaka, is under fire after she allegedly tried to bribe a journalist.

According to video footage from Daily Maverick, Malaka met with journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh on 3 August 2025. This was after her spokesperson, Phasha Makgolane, allegedly approached Myburg with the intent to influence him to stop his ongoing investigation into one of Malaka's properties.

What happened during the meeting?

The meeting took place after Myburgh reportedly met with Makgolane on 6 June, who allegedly offered Myburgh regular payments of more than R100,000 and his choice of lucrative contracts in exchange for more favourable press coverage. He then informed him of Malaka's intention to speak to him about the investigation.

Myburgh, after informing his editors and preparing for the meeting, met with them. In the video, which has gone viral on social media, Malaka is heard saying that she wants Myburgh to drop the investigation into her.

Money allegedly exchanged

After Malaka had a conversation with Myburgh, Makgolane returned to them. Myburgh asked how much they had, and they blatantly said R60,000. Makgolane then produced a white Dior bag with a stack of R200 notes held together by elastic bands. Myburgh took pictures of the money and revealed to them that he had no intention of accepting the money. He placed the money between them and left.

What happened to Malaka?

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson suspended Malaka in July for her involvement in the irregular awarding of an R800 million Pressure Swing Adsorption Oxygent Plant tender. Malaka and other officials were involved, including the General Manager for Supply Chain Management, Dr Molebedi Sisi.

The Economic Freedom Fighters opened a case against Macpherson in January and accused him of interfering with an IDT tender. Macpherson allegedly pressed the IDT to pay a contractor, and the EFF cried foul.

Two Emalahleni Local Municipality MMCs were arrested for accepting a R20,000 bribe. The South African Police Service nabbed them at the Witbank Dam on 16 April.

Advocate Teffo alleges that he was offered a bribe
