What did Maimane focus on?
The former Democratic Alliance’s study focused on creating a model that addressed the reform of metropolitan governance and promoted effective and efficient municipalities. His study looked at the coalitions and local governance challenges in Cape Town, Gqeberha, Tshwane and Johannesburg between 2014 and 2019.
The PhD is not his only academic achievement either. The BOSA leader has two master's degrees: one in Public Administration and the other in Theology. He is also an ordained pastor who has preached locally and internationally.
How did Maimane react?
Following an outpouring of support on social media, Maimane expressed his gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), as he described it as a humbling moment.
“Thank you for all the kind words, South Africa,” he said.
Maimane also thanked his parents, saying he would not be sitting with a PhD if not for them.
"My parents sacrificed a lot to give me the right foundations. Otherwise, there’s no way I’d be sitting here today with a PhD. It means a lot to them.”
He explained that his mother didn’t finish school because of Apartheid, and his father worked in a factory, but they made a lot of sacrifices for him to get where he is.

Obtaining a PhD in South Africa
A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy (NQF level 10), is a research-based academic or professional degree. In most countries, it qualifies the holder to teach at the university level or work in a specialised role within their field. It is the highest recognised qualification in South Africa.
PhD studies are conducted under the supervision of an academic advisor and typically require a minimum of two years to complete.
To apply for a PhD, candidates must usually hold a recognised Master’s degree. In special cases, the university Senate may approve applicants with a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
