GAUTENG – An attack on a cash-in-transit (CIT) van in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, has left homeowners reeling and at least one guard injured.

A brazen gang attacked the van in the afternoon of Monday, 28 July 2025, bombing it up to get to the cash inside. Mahoro Street, where the incident took place, had to be cordoned off as the bomb unit searched the area for any signs of explosives.

Why was the area cordoned off?

Law enforcement teams, which included the bomb squad, closed off the area as they combed through the scene of the attack. A community member who spoke to Eyewitness News said that they heard what sounded like four explosions and then gunshots.

Police also advised community members to move as far away from the area as possible, as the bomb squad was searching for more explosives. Glass and debris from the G4S van littered the area, but that wasn’t the only damage suffered.

Several homes were also damaged as the force of the explosion smashed windows and blew off roofs. The fence of the nearby Umzamo Primary School was also damaged.

How did South Africans react?

Social media users were frustrated by the crime, but many also expressed concern for the well-being of the G4S guards.

Frank Mwangonde asked:

“No one is talking about the security guards in the van, are they okay?”

Prince Nkosana Khumalo also asked:

“Are the guards safe?”

Mile William Rantsho stated:

“Those people who work for that company are also parents, are also human beings.”

Monika Teasdale said:

“Those criminals have absolutely no regard for civilian lives, and less so for property. This is typical of a lawless society. Even more so when corrupt law enforcers are involved, then it's open season for criminality.”

David Farrell asked:

“When is this type of crime going to be declared as terrorism, or even treason?”

Lorraine Shephard said:

“Hopefully the driver is safe.”
