Video footage has since surfaced of the aftermath of the heist, where people can be scurrying as gunshots can be heard in the background. One resident of the area, who spoke to the Boksburg Advertiser, said that he was working in his garden when he heard two loud explosions go off.
He added that he then heard the sound of gunfire, adding that it lasted approximately 13 minutes.
Another video showed people crowding around the wreckage of the vehicles as they attempted to grab whatever cash they could. The police have urged members of the public not to approach CIT heists in the aftermath, or attempt to collect money lying around the scene, as they are putting themselves at risk.
Bystanders shot dead during heist
As investigations got underway into the crime on Barry Marais Road in Boksburg, police were able to confirm that the two victims were bystanders. The South African Police Service could also confirm that the CIT vehicle was rammed by a silver Mercedes-Benz. This caused it to overturn onto a minibus taxi.
At least five people were injured and needed medical treatment, while the other two occupants of the taxi escaped unharmed.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, also noted that the gang of armed men responsible for the heist consisted of eight suspects, who all managed to escape.
