Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Lucas Suarez has reportedly joined Uruguayan side Liverpool Futbol Club after leaving the Premier Soccer League giants this summer.

Suarez joined Sundowns on loan from CA Talleres in the January transfer window but failed to meet expectations, and his costly error in the Brazilians' defeat against Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup would not be forgotten by the club's fans.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup that Suarez would no longer be playing for the team as the club decided not to sign him permanently.

He was released by Masandawana at the end of last season, alongside Sipho Mbule, who recently joined Orlando Pirates on a free transfer, Sanele Tshabalala, Sifiso Ngobeni, and Thabang Sibanyoni.

Suarez joins Liverpool FC on loan

According to reports, Suarez will be joining Liverpool FC on a season-long loan with an option to buy from CA Talleres next summer.

During his stay with the Betway Premiership champions, the Argentine defender racked up 14 appearances in all competitions and found the back of the net once. He was part of the team that lifted the league title, but was unable to earn a permanent move.

The 30-year-old centre-back is now tasked with showing how good he is to the Uruguayan side so he can earn a permanent move to the club at the end of his loan deal next summer.

Suarez's move to Liverpool FC in the Uruguayan league gathered different reactions from South African football fans on social media, as some mistook the club for the English Premier League champions, Liverpool Football Club.

Mamelodi Sundowns sign Kaizer Chiefs target

Briefly News also reported that Mamelodi Sundowns have kick-started their transfer plans this summer as they complete the signing of a South African international who was linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs.

The Brazilians were not the only Premier Soccer League side wanting to sign the Bafana Bafana star, with Orlando Pirates also linked to the player.
