South African international Keanu Cupido has shared the story behind overcoming injury and breaking into Mamelodi Sundowns' starting line-up since the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Bafana Bafana defender joined the Brazilians in the January transfer window from Cape Town and was mostly on the bench before the tournament in North America.

The former Cape Town City player also made a strong start to the season, featuring prominently in Sundowns’ dominant performance against Richards Bay in last week’s MTN8 quarter-finals.

Cupido, while speaking with iDiskiTimes, narrated how his wife helped him pass through the difficult times while he was battling an injury.

“It was really tough for me before,” Cupido admitted.
“But my wife made it easier. She reminded me that everything happens in God’s timing, and if it’s meant to be, it will work out. That mindset kept me going.”

The South African international explained how his wife was crucial to him staying motivated, and it was all he needed to remain focused.

“Her support was crucial in keeping me motivated, focused, and working hard. Having that kind of backing makes all the difference.”

He was a constant starter in Mamelodi Sundowns' squad at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States last month, and he claimed the competition showcased his talent and how good he is as a defender.

“This season’s tournament gave me a chance to show people who I am — my talent, my character, and my skills as a defender. I feel much more confident heading into this season compared to the last.”
