1. Retshegofaditswe ‘Ox’ Nché was born on 23 July 1995.

2. His nickname, ‘Ox,’ reflects his immense power at the scrums and breakdowns. The gifted prop has often been compared to former Springbok loosehead Os du Randt.

3. Nché attended HTS Louis Botha, one of the less prominent rugby schools in the rugby-mad city of Bloemfontein, where he stood out representing Free State at the U16 and U18 national tournaments.

4. He went on to study Geography and Statistics at the University of the Free State, earning the chance to play for the Shimlas in the Varsity Cup.

5. Nché made his Super Rugby debut for the Cheetahs in 2016. Even early in his senior career, it was clear he was a versatile front-rower, capable of linking with the backs in attack and contesting at the breakdown in defence.

6. Later that year, he competed in the Currie Cup for the first time, helping Free State clinch the title for the first time in nine years. His outstanding performances earned him the Currie Cup Player of the Year award at SA Rugby’s annual prize-giving.

7. In 2017, opportunity came knocking when Nché was selected for the South Africa A squad to face the French Barbarians in a two-game series. Despite impressing, he had to wait another year to earn his first Test cap.

8. In June 2018, new Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus split the squad to manage the unique challenge of facing Wales in Washington DC and England in Johannesburg within a week. Erasmus sent an experimental ‘B’ side, with Nché starting on debut against Wales. Although the team narrowly lost, the young loosehead didn’t get another chance during Erasmus’s tenure.

9.The Cheetahs were relegated from Super Rugby in late 2017 and, less than three years later, were dropped from the Pro14 roster.

10.Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira, who retired after winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup, believes Nché has the potential to become one of the great Springbok looseheads.
